Position:   Buyer/Planner
Shift:             1st Shift
Location:    The Specialty Mfg. Co. – White Bear Lake, MN

Position Description

  • Responsible for sourcing, contracting and inventory planning activities for assigned commodities to achieve and maintain pricing, quality, and delivery objectives.
  • Works under the direction of the SMC Supply Chain/Planning Manager.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop, evaluate, and manage supplier relationships to achieve material cost, quality, availability (delivery), and inventory goals.
  • Maintain supplier quality and delivery through assessment, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring. Troubleshoot/analyze quality and/or delivery problems and work with the supplier along with the appropriate SMC department(s) to resolve issues and eliminate production interruptions due to material shortages.
  • Understand and communicate supplier capabilities and capacity.
  • Assess suggested order requirements and implement commodity procurement plans.
  • Assist in the research of new product/process technologies.
  • Support Production and New Product Introduction by serving as a materials resource.
  • Participate in critical supplier selection and creation of audit plans.
  • Perform supplier audits.
  • Any other duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to influence and negotiate.
  • Requires good oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid mathematical and PC skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of MRP systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements a plus—ie—REACH, ROHS, etc.
  • Understand supply-chain management.
  • Works in office in a manufacturing environment.
  • May require some travel.
  • Most work must be performed on site during normal SMC business hours.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, or engineering or equivalent experience. APICS and CPIM a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years materials related experience, preferably procurement experience.
