A long time Specialty Manufacturing customer, Advantage Engineering (AEC) was having a problem out in the field. A manufacturer of aftermarket automotive equipment, they’d been successfully selling their new Engine Coolant Exchange system for several months. By most measures, it was a big hit. However, AEC began to get calls for replacement 657 Ball Valves. It seems mechanics were treating the equipment rather roughly, dropping the hose line/plastic valve to the garage floor, occasionally breaking the handle.
AEC contacted Specialty Manufacturing to see if anything could be done to improve the situation. They’d been using our standard 657 Plastic Ball Valve on the machine and preferred not to change. AEC liked the overall performance of the lightweight, easy to use valve. They also liked the valves 90° (right angle) design.
The first step was to let Specialty Mfg. Engineers inspect some of the broken handles. One look and a potential solution was identified. It seems dropping the valve/hose to the concrete floor was breaking the internal plastic ball & stem section of the valve. How about we replace the plastic ball & stem with one made of metal? The valve would look and feel the same but should be far stronger. AEC liked the idea.
Prototypes were made, tested and approved quickly by AEC, all within a matter of a few weeks. Test data was also provided to support the improvements. AEC was able to make a running change to production and were able to send out replacements as needed.
